UCPS Mentors Gear up for 21st Century Mentoring Practices
UCPS Mentors are as excited as ever about providing support to the District’s Beginning Teachers. During two days of Mentor Training on the new NC Mentor Standards, 160 mentors did reflection activities, provided feedback on the needs of beginning teachers and mentors, and discussed what the standards mean in practical terms. Mentors also worked in groups to share ideas from drafts of their Site-Based Beginning Teacher and Mentor Support Plans that will serve as the framework for 21st Century mentoring and support practices at the building-level. The site-based plans will be accessible from the Human Resources Support Services Website by December 15, 2011.
The Union County Public Schools 2011-2012 Beginning and Mentor Support Handbook outlines a total system of aligned support activities based on the new standards.

Jessica Garner presents NC Educator Evaluation System Overview
Jessica Garner, NC Department of Public Instruction Professional Development Lead for Region 6, returned to Union County Public Schools for an overview of the NC Educator Evaluation System. Mrs. Garner explains that the "Observation" is not a tool used to "rate" the teacher, but is an instrument for gathering data during a classroom session. The data will be measured by the elements listed in the rubrics of the NC Teaching Standards. Therefore, an observation is a tool that is used as a guide for teachers as they reflect upon and improve their effectiveness in the growth and achievement for the benefit of the students.
